| Dear Rob, This summer I would like to teach my 10- and 7-year-old sons how to fish. First, where is a good place in or around South Mississippi to fish? Secondly, I am not that experienced either, so what is a good starting bait and equipment to use for this novice fishing excursion? Looking forward to your response. Thanks - Rick Great question Rick. Thank you for your interest in getting your boys into fishing. Once you light this fire, you and your sons will be building memories one trip at a time that they will carry with them for life! I would suggest for boys that age with little or no fishing experience to put them on fish. Don't start with trying to finesse bass with artificial baits, because that is an art that takes some skill, that they won't have the patience to learn. I would say Bream fishing is your best bet. You can bream fish from piers or directly from the bank in many areas in South Mississippi. Okhissa Lake has some of the bigger bream I've seen in a long time. Crickets or Redworms make excellent livebait to catch these fiesty flat fish of freshwater. I am also convinced that if they made a ten pound bream, nobody would be bass fishing! These things fight!!! Bream bed from April to September in this area as a rule. If you can get to areas where bedding takes place a few days before the full moon, you can load the ice chest up with these awesome fighters. Once your sons have caught fish, they will want bigger and better challenges. At this point, I would upgrade them to catching catfish, for bigger fish and a tough fight. Catfish can be taken using baits conviently pre made now. When I was a boy, it was tubs of blood bait, but the novice really has it made these days. Fishing equipment can be purchased in Combo packs and really make it easy on you. Zebco makes a 33 Classic Combo Package that is easy to operate, and will handle most types of fishing. Now, having said that, I wouldn't take them to the Mississippi River to Blue Catfish with that combo. Be realistic. Remember, make the trip fun for them. Bring some snackes and drinks for when the action slows down, and don't forget this.....When they say they are ready to go, the trip is over. Nothing will burn a kid out more than forcing them to do something, because then it becomes a chore. Best of luck to you Rick! Regards, Rob |
